Most visitors fly to Pemba’s airport near Chake Chake, either from Zanzibar (Unguja) or from Dar es Salaam. The flight is short. There is also a passenger ferry, which is cheaper but takes much longer and depends on the sea.

Pemba is good to visit for most of the year. The driest months are usually June to October, and again from December to February. The long rains fall roughly from March to May, when some boat trips may not run if the sea is rough.

If you have your dates already, message us and we’ll tell you honestly what the conditions are likely to be.

For boat trips and snorkeling, bring swimwear, a t-shirt for sun protection, and something warm for the ride back.

Pemba is a mostly Muslim island, and in villages and towns it is respectful to cover your shoulders and knees. Swimwear is fine on the beach and on the boat, but not in villages. Nobody will be rude to you about it — but people notice and appreciate it.
